Light or Modesty?

Dearest fashion reader,

Often times, the topic of discussion for your typical Christian fashion girlie deals with modesty and we hear it, we get it … But lets talk about light for a moment.

Matthew 5:14 - ‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden’.

First thing first… YOU ARE LIGHT.

Matter of fact, we naturally express outwardly what lives within us. In this case - the Spirit of God and the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Fashion: what you wear, how you wear it, where you wear it, should be an outward expression and example of the Gospel we believe and preach about. Your style in creativity, coordination and excellence has the power to construct engagement with someone, enough for you to point them to Christ … and the store you found your items from obviously. But the key thing here is, you are expressing and extending the light that was introduced to you when you were once in darkness.

The light we encountered brought about change, conviction, pruning, growth, good fruits… you name it. And though modesty is a key topic of conversation, there is so much more than modesty to consider when it comes to fashion choices and styling.

Lets talk about flames for instance. The more a flame is exposed to oxygen, the hotter and transparent or blue/purple that flame becomes. Similarly, the more we are exposed to the Ruach of God - the breath of God, the more our flame/light should shine brighter. By nature of intimacy, we become sensitive. Sensitivity and conviction become brighter and as a result our fashion styles, conformity to trends, how we dress and what/how we clothe ourselves from revelation begins to alter.

The matter is all about what pleases God and not the check list for what we have constructed modesty to look like. A flame shines in the room, it doesn’t hide neither can it be hidden. Let intimacy with God, the all wise and all knowing… the one who created, creates and who is still in the business of creativity inspire you on what you wear and or how you wear it. Let the word of God be your blueprint. And let it do the talking. Let the gospel be expressed through your style.

So, to my fashion lovers…

Let fashion and style not just be a conversation about modesty and how far down the skirt should be. Though the topic of modesty is still a key element of conversation, let the conversation provoke you to think and act on pursuing a style, that shines light, that can bring glory to God.

Be reminded: We are light. Lights are visible for all to see. They illuminate the spaces they enter.
